The number of charter schools grew by 13 percent last year, reports the Center for Education Reform. There are now 3,625 charter schools — about four percent of public schools — educating more than 1 million students.
However, only 20 percent of Americans know that charter schools are public schools.
New Orleans will reopen 20 schools as charters.
