Scientific inquiry: Diet Coke and Mentos

In the spirit of scientific inquiry and in honor of every one who ever built an erupting volcano for the science fair, here’s a video showing what happens when two guys combine Diet Coke and Mentos. Lots of Diet Coke and lots of Mentos.

My son and I did the Mentos experiment, taped it, put it in YouTube and 3,000 people have now seen it.

The last week of school, if a class was especially good, I took them outside we did our little science experiment. Diet Coke was 99 cents for a two liter bottle. Five bucks and a few Mentos was a small price to pay.

I wonder what happens if you drink a Diet Coke and then pop a Mentos.

Ah, to go back to the days of real rocket science rather than Mento science…. But the chemicals and materials required would be illegal and immoral - but unlike Mentos, not fattening!
