Urban school renewal

In hopes of drawing families back to St. Louis, Mayor Francis Slay is inviting “local educators, Midwest nonprofit education groups, and big charter school companies” to open charter schools.

“Our city is cleaner, safer and more beautiful than it has been in a long time,” Slay wrote in the letter. “In short, St. Louis has it all — except enough quality public schools.”

The city’s public schools have been taken over by a Special Administrative Board. “Slay says he realized two years ago that he could no longer wait for the district to clean up,” reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
