The Hispanic familia is changing, reports The Economist.
In the past ten years the birth rate among unmarried Latinas has risen from 89 to 100 per 1,000. It is now much higher than the rate among black or white women see chart. Late last year came a significant but little-noticed announcement: probably for the first time, half of all Hispanic children in America were born out of wedlock.
The Latino family is not in such a dire state as the black family, where 71% of children are born to single mothers. Yet the gap appears to be closing. In 1995 the unmarried teenage birth rate for Latinas was 20% lower than the rate for blacks. It is now 12% higher.
Naturally, most Latina single parents live in poverty.
Update: Marriage rates have fallen to a new low in Britain. There are no tax advantages to marriage any more; a single parent with children has more access to benefits. A crackdown on sham immigration marriages also has had an effect.
Massive illegal immigration has resulted in the creation of large Hispanic enclaves whose inhabitants do not fully assimilate. A couple of years ago the LA Times ran a column (Column One) on a Mexican family that relocated to Kentucky to get away from Mexifornia and its culture of low expectations and social deviancy. The daughters were forced to fully assimilate, eventually graduating high school and college to go on to successful careers. Within the past 30 years parts of the US have become checkerboards of various autonomous ethnic realms that require little or no interaction with the native population. Such Balkanization is a politically correct form of national suicide known euphemistically as multiculturalism. Can you say, “E pluribus plus”?

But it seems that Hispanic immigrants are assimilating with respect to the most degenerate aspects of our culture - and this is a far more serious issue.
