Chicago closed digital divide: Low achievers learned less, high achievers learned more

Chicago Public Schools worked hard to provide high-speed Internet access to all its K-12 students when schools closed. But closing the digital divide widened the achievement gap, concludes a study. Low achievers did worse. High achievers did better.


Why? Distraction.


"Broadband program participation boosted remote learning engagement and achievement for previously high-performing students and reduced engagement and achievement for low-performing pupils," researchers concluded.
