60 Minutes has a very positive story on the University of Austin, which admitted its first class of students this fall.
Students are admitted based on MEI (merit, excellence, intelligence) -- and willingness to debate ideas -- without regard to race, ethnicity or sex. Most are white and Asian, and two-thirds of the first class are male. I wonder if males are braver about trying a college that doesn't promise to be a "safe space" -- or perhaps just braver about a brand-new college that won't complete accreditation until the first class graduates. Or ... ?
I wrote in Education Next about the UATX's hopes to become a center for inquiry -- not just a haven for the canceled.
Everyone should look up the history of Patrick Henry College which was the last version of this idea.
