Teachers wanted: special ed, ESL, math, science

Writer: Joanne JacobsJoanne Jacobs

“The number of U.S. teachers has grown by 13 percent in four years, far outpacing the 2 percent rise in student enrollment, writes Debra Viadero in Education Week. However, schools have trouble recruiting and retaining teachers for special education, foreign languages, English as a Second Language, math, computer science and science.

Some districts are offering day-care centers for employees’ children or below-market-rate housing.

Strong school leadership is as important in retaining teachers as salary and school climate, according to an Ed Week survey of teachers, reports Viadero.
